November 18: Too Familiar

“‘Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offense at him.”
—Mark 6:3 ESV

Have you ever felt like you had Jesus completely figured out?

So did the people from his hometown, and they limited him by their lack of faith (see Mark 6:5).

It is natural to develop an opinion about Jesus as we read and hear about him, but there is a great danger to this: when we put Jesus in a box we actually end up limiting what he can do in our life.

When we read the Bible and something Jesus says or does doesn’t seem to “fit” with our idea of him, we have two options: we can ignore or dismiss what we just read or we can let it be an invitation to discover an aspect of Jesus’ character that we haven’t seen yet.

My prayer is that we will let those uncomfortable passages bring us closer to God.

Here’s a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Breathe in: Jesus,
Breathe out: I want to know you more.
