I’m going to be honest: I’m not a fan of traditional devotionals. You know, those books or online plans that have a daily reading and a prayer that you’re supposed to follow along with.
I generally prefer to simply read the Bible and meditate on a word or sentence from the text.
But my attitude about daily readings began to change when I subscribed to Seth Godin’s blog. If you’re familiar with Seth Godin, you’ll know that he writes about business and marketing, not the Bible or spirituality. But what I love about his blog is that he sends a short email every day that leaves you with one simple thought to digest. And some of those emails have kept me thinking for weeks (you can find Seth’s blog here).
I began to think, “What if I did what Seth is doing, but in the world of Christian spirituality?”
And that’s where Further Up came from.
My goal with every Daily Thought here at Further Up is to leave you with one simple idea that will help you invite God into your ordinary, busy life.
I believe that transformation comes from connection to God, and if I can help you grow a little closer to God every day, I will be happy.
The name “Further Up” comes from C. S. Lewis’ The Last Battle, where near the end of the story Jewel the Unicorn exclaims, “I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now…Come further up, come further in!”
My prayer is that we never settle for superficiality but daily respond to God’s call to go Further Up.
