November 16: The Golden Rule

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
— Matthew 7:12 ESV

We live in an “eye for an eye” world. A society that teaches us to treat others the way that they treat us.

If someone treats you with respect, show them respect. If someone insults you, insult them back.

But Jesus showed us another way. In Matthew 7:12 he taught us to do to others what we wish that they would do to us.

This means that we should treat even our enemies with love.

This becomes easier when we realize that this is exactly how Jesus treated us: while we were his enemies he died for us (see Rom. 5:10).

Today we have a decision to make: we can be like everyone else and treat people the way they treat us, or we can love like Jesus.

How will you choose to live today?

Carry this prayer with you during your busy day:

Breathe in: Jesus,
Breathe out: Help me love like you.
