March 5 (Lent, Day 4): Where Does My Help Come From?

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
—Psalm 121:1-2 ESV

The pilgrim road is a dangerous one.

Psalm 120 spoke of the reasons for embarking on a pilgrimage; Psalm 121 speaks of the very real dangers a pilgrim faces on their journey.

So the Psalmist asks the question: Where will I look for help? Who will keep me safe?

First they look to the hills, home of the high places: altars where many people offered sacrifices to idols.

No, they can’t offer any real help.

Our help does not come from the idols on the hills, but from the maker of heaven and earth.

Remember this: the road is dangerous, but it is in his domain.

And we can trust him to help us.

Let that be our song today.

Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Inhale: My help comes from the Lord,
Exhale: The maker of heaven and earth.
