“By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.”
—Psalm 41:11 ESV

David, the writer of this Psalm, bases his assurance of God’s love not on a past event but on a future one: “…my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.”

Let’s be honest: at first glance that seems a little odd.

It would be reasonable to base one’s confidence on God’s past actions.

But here David bases his claim on something that hasn’t happened yet.

How can he do that?

Because his confidence is not only found only in what God has done, but in who he is.

God is faithful. And David is counting on his future faithfulness because he knows God’s character.

The circumstances of our life may change, but God remains the same yesterday, today and forever.

Whatever obstacles you are facing today, stand firm on the truth that God delights in you. You can count on him.

Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Breathe in: God
Breathe out: I’m counting on you.
