“Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people!”
—Psalm 3:7-8 ESV
In these final verses of Psalm 3, David cried out to God once again.
He had an army, but he knew he couldn’t count on it to save him. As Psalm 33:16 (NIV) reminds us: “No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.”
David knew a key truth: salvation belongs to the Lord.
It didn’t matter how large or skilled his army was; if the Lord was against him he would lose, and if the Lord fought for him he would win.
Period.
This didn’t lead him to inaction; David still had to fight a battle, after all.
But he knew that his only chance of winning was if the Lord fought for him, and so he cried out to the only one who could save him.
May we learn from his example.
Here is a short prayer to help you invite God into every moment of your day:
Inhale: God,
Exhale: I’m counting on you.
