“The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
—Psalm 121:5-8 NIV

The Hebrew word “shamar,” translated “keep” or “watch over,” is repeated six times in verses 4-8 of Psalm 121. I think the author was trying to make a point.

God is watching over us.

He is our shade by day and our protection by night.

He watches over our going out and our coming in.

He will keep us from all evil.

The pilgrim road is dangerous, but we need not be afraid because the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, is watching over us.

That knowledge should bring us peace.

He is with us.

Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Inhale: You’re watching over me;
Exhale: I will not fear.
