March 30 (Lent, Day 29): More Than Watchmen for the Morning

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.”
—Psalm 130:5-6 ESV

I love the imagery of this psalm.

The night is dark and cold, and unknown dangers lurk in the blackness. The watchman, alert to every shifting shadow, fights the urge to close his eyes and sleep.

And he waits eagerly for the morning: the moment when the menacing shadows will be revealed as harmless objects and he will be relieved of his duty and allowed to rest.

That is how the Psalmist describes waiting for the Lord.

Though the night is dark, the watchman is confident that the sun will rise just as it has countless other times.

And it is that hope that gives him the energy to outlast the night.

I don’t know what situation you are facing today, but be sure of this: the night may be dark, but God will come through.

We can count on him.

Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Inhale: God,
Exhale: I’m counting on you.
