“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates.”
—Psalm 127:3-5 NIV
In the ancient world having children was the primary way that someone would leave a legacy for the future.
To understand Psalm 127 we need to remember that.
These verses are, of course, speaking of the blessing of having children, but they’re not just speaking of that.
They are speaking of transcendence: living a life that is not in vain (see verses 1-2) and makes a difference even beyond our lifetime.
Whether that involves having children or not in your case, be sure of this: the ability to live a meaningful life is a gift from God.
We have a part to play (children don’t just spontaneously appear, after all), but we should never forget that God is the one who breathes life into every newborn child and gives significance to everything we do.
Take a moment to invite God into every thought, action and decision you make today.
And remember: “In him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:
Inhale: With you, God,
Exhale: Every moment has meaning.
