“Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
—Psalm 124:8 ESV
When we think of someone’s name, we usually just think of it as a way to identify someone. Saying, “Hi, my name is Chris” doesn’t have much more meaning than simply, “That’s what you should call me.”
A name, biblically speaking, is much more than an identifier.
It refers to the character (and sometimes the calling) of a person. If you want to study this theme further, the stories of Abraham and Jacob (Genesis 12-22 and 25-36) are especially helpful for understanding this idea.
Psalm 124 says that our help is in the name of the Lord. In his character. In who he is.
We can trust God because we know that he is faithful.
We know he will help us because he is our Helper.
The more we know God and learn about his character, the more we will be able to trust him.
Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:
Inhale: You’re faithful, God.
Exhale: I trust you.
