“Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail;
let the nations be judged before you!
Put them in fear, O Lord!
Let the nations know that they are but men! Selah.”
—Psalm 9:19-20 ESV
Sooner or later, all of us will have to come face-to-face with our own humanity.
In our daily life, death feels so distant that we rarely stop to think about it, but the truth remains: someday, our life will end.
And here’s another truth: we have much less control over when that day will come than we would like to admit.
Simply put, we’re not God.
These verses remind us that, one day, the nations will present themselves before God for judgment, and on that day all will remember that they are “but men.” Human. Mortal.
We can humble ourselves now or be humbled later. The choice is ours.
Here is a short prayer to help you invite God into every moment of your day:
Inhale: This life is short;
Exhale: Remind me of my humanity.
