“Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds!
For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.”
—Psalm 9:11-12 ESV
The vengeance of God is another tricky subject because it feels violent and can offend modern sensibilities.
For that reason, we need to remember a key fact: God’s vengeance is not about “getting even” but about bringing justice to the afflicted.
And in a world where many powerful people take advantage of the most vulnerable, we should be grateful that God is “he who avenges blood.”
In a world where the poor seem to have no voice, it is refreshing to know that God “does not forget the cry of the afflicted.”
On a societal level, that means that God will one day make all wrongs right.
On a personal level, that means that your prayers are not falling on deaf ears.
God hears you, and he will not forget your cry.
Here is a short prayer to help you invite God into every moment of your day:
Inhale: God,
Exhale: Hear my prayer.
