“Many are saying of my soul, there is no hope for him in God.”
—Psalm 3:2 ESV

Have you ever felt like David in this Psalm: like everyone was against you?

The truth is that we face negative voices every day: on the news, from our coworkers, from our family.

And if we’re not careful, we can begin to believe those voices.

If you’ve ever felt like you had no future, like things would never get better, and that even God couldn’t help you, you know what I’m talking about.

That’s why I love what David says next: “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head” (Ps. 3:3).

The lifter of my head.

That’s who God is. He restores our hope when we have none. He helps us hold our head high even when our own thoughts would lead us ever deeper into despair.

If you’re in a moment where you can’t even summon the strength to pray, take heart at David’s words: “I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill” (Ps. 3:4).

God is listening to your cry, and he will answer you.

Here is a short prayer to carry with you today:

Breathe in: Lifter of my head,
Breathe out: Give me the strength to pray.
