February 17: In The Land Of The Living

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!”
—Psalm 27:13 ESV

It is foolish to expect to see the fulfillment of every biblical promise in our lifetime. The heroes of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11, for example, “all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13 ESV).

We are strangers and exiles on this earth, and we should not seek our reward in this life (see Psalm 17:14).

That being said, we should not think that God has abandoned us here in this “land of the living.”

No, he is with us, and he is good.

Things won’t always go our way, and enemies will rise up against us, but in the midst of hardship we can be assured that God is always with us (see Matthew 28:20).

Regardless of the circumstances you are facing today, take a moment to pause and “look upon the goodness of the Lord.”

Breathe deeply and simply be present with God.

And be sure of this: you are not alone.

Here is a simple prayer to carry with you today:

Breathe in: I will see the goodness of the Lord
Breathe out: in the land of the living.
