“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
—Revelation 3:20 NIV
If an unexpected guest were to appear at your front door right now, you might panic: there are dishes to wash, floors to sweep, clothes to put away. The house is not in any state to receive a visitor.
But Jesus does not tell us that we need to “clean up our house” before he will enter.
In fact, he only speaks of two things that we must do.
One: hear his voice. Pay attention to his quiet whisper.
Two: open the door.
This teaches us something very important: Jesus doesn’t seek perfect people in whom to dwell, but those who are simply willing to let him in.
He’ll take care of cleaning up our mess.
Here’s a simple prayer to carry with you today:
Breathe in: Jesus,
Breathe out: I open the door.
